The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) is an organization of medical professionals with approximately 20,000 members. It hosts a House of Delegates that votes on resolutions regarding actions or policy for the organization to adopt.
This year, two resolutions related to “gender medicine” are up for a vote.
Resolution 163 calls for clinical trials regarding the use of puberty blockers to treat induced fixation on sexual characteristics. ROAR does not support this resolution. As has been pointed out regarding the recent proposed clinical trial of puberty blockers in the UK, the harms of administering puberty blockers are well documented, including impaired cognitive functioning, bone density loss, and possible infertility. The only stated benefit comes from “validating” a claimed “gender identity,” a pseudoreligious belief more in line with superstition than science.
Medical associations and healthcare providers should not be entertaining the notion that some people cannot become their “true selves” without being sexually altered as children. It makes about as much sense as testing the claim that chopping off the hands of specially selected people will help the crops grow.
In contrast, Resolution 164 asks the MSSNY to endorse the ASPS’s clear-eyed position statement on “gender” surgery for minors. Dr. Scot Glasberg, who introduced the resolution, carefully lays out the problems with allowing children to undergo irreversible sex-trait surgeries before they are capable of processing the long-term outcomes.
We welcome any efforts to curtail the extreme, insane cruelty of inducing distress in children by encouraging them to hyperfixate on an imaginary “gender identity,” then selling back hormones and surgeries as a cure for that distress. It goes beyond lack of evidence at this point, though lack of evidence of benefit is a large part of why this practice must be stopped.
Those still pushing the notion of “gender-affirming care” at this late hour are proving that there are no limits that would stop them, not even endorsing the heartless mutilation and sterilization of thousands of children, from sacrificing truth to uphold the lie that they are doing the right thing.
Likewise, those of us with moral courage remaining have to speak up and warn them the grift has already been exposed. Every one of us that stands up makes it easier for those who come after them.
The vote on this resolution will most likely happen this weekend. Let’s make sure the MSSNY knows we’re here!

Dear MSSNY House of Delegates,I am writing to you as a [New Yorker, concerned citizen, member of the public] to give my full support to Resolution 164.[Please share a personal story if you have it! Do you have a child that was caught in this? Did you face challenges at work for asking the right questions? Have you been a victim of this type of medical abuse?]The position statement of the ASPS regarding so-called "gender-affirming" surgery for children is timely, crafted according to the standards of evidence-based medicine, properly protective of children who would have otherwise been healthy, and, according to polling, in line with the will of the general public. Not only are children still discovering who they are, the quality of evidence that these surgeries provide any benefit at all is low and the irreversible harms are well documented. It is no great kindness to tell children they cannot be their "true selves" without surgery; instead it is extreme cruelty being practiced on people too young to question what is being done to them in the name of ideology. The number of young men and women speaking out about the permanent harm the surgeries they underwent as children left them with will only grow. Here, in New York, where activist efforts have chilled genuine scientific inquiry through threats and exclusion, pushing back on pseudoreligious gender dogma is needed more than ever. Children's lives are at stake. The idea that modifying the sex traits of children is "medically necessary" to resolve their distress is a generation-defining scandal, one that the victims of medical abuse sounded the alarm about long before professional associations were able to admit their mistake. You can either stand for truth and justice, or keep the lie going a bit longer. Vote YES on Resolution 164.
